Digital Literacy Literally

Having an understanding of how to use the internet is key in this day in age.  But one must also now know not just how it works, but how to use it.  There are many elements in the way information is categorized, distributed, seen and found.  When it comes to being someone, such as an aspiring artist, it is without question essential in both utilization and having an understanding of how to utilize it to your advantage and best interest.  There are sites out there that will distribute your work across the world wide web for you such as Tunecore, but one should always be aware of how these sort of sites work and where they work.  Sites such as Tunecore, identify and itemize everywhere you can distribute your self.  The beautiful thing about this sort of information is you can see the way everything is interlinked as well as gain insight as to the top distribution sites currently on the web.  Once you’re able to start seeing the way sites like Tunecore distribute and market you can take these elements and begin utilizing them at the same time on your own.  Once you begin branching off into your own digital marketing scheme, you start to develop an awareness as to where you make your work and self available on the web as well as what you post and the sites that might be interlinked channeling this same information.  The web has become this organic entity that once you see how it lives and breathes you become aware of how you can interact and plug into it….no pun intended.

How to build a song…

The creative process is something that is unique to each artist. How perception affects artistic direction is just one of the many beautiful elements to be found in this process.  The way a melody is formed, the way the melody sounds to the melodic transitions within a composition as well as the rhythm itself is all derived from the way we see ourselves and our interaction and reaction to all that surrounds us.  I’m big into cinematic and orchestral works and feel this tone or ambiance matches the Universal soundtrack to that which is life.  When I produce I will usual start with the drums.  Get the rhythm and energy of the track going and from there began deciding what tonality or mood fits well with the energy of the drums.  From this point I can begin deciding which instruments will capture and fill the desired envisioning, and begin the constructing and sculpting process.  Once I have achieved my desired “sound” I will begin arranging how the piece will lay out, and begin deciding any climatic or cinematic elements I wish to include.  I like to think if you produce the right instrumental or rhythmic sound-scape you can tell a story without having to use words.  Even when I build with an emcee or an artist that is writing something to one of my works, I always keep in mind the visual aspect sound can and does offer.

I’ve added a recent production piece I’ve done to give you an example or a reference:

Soundcloud

Soundcloud, not just a cloud, or a sound, or a cloud of sound, but a great outlet for the established or indie artist wanting to both showcase their works and talents, and also connect with other artists alike and from other parts of the musical spectrum.  I’ve been a user of this site for a few years now and have enjoyed the fluent user-friendly interface it has to offer as well as the way you can showcase your work.  You get your standard default image display as with other sites that you can utilize to showcase either your pretty face, the cover to your album, “Pretty Face”, or any other visual monstrosities you wish to use to express the uniquely you that is your entire essence……or maybe just a smidge of essence.  Soundcloud allows you to post a biography about the artist that is you as well as include any links to your website or other sites you may be affiliated with.  The really unique thing about soundcloud is once you upload an audio file or a song, it doesn’t display it as just the title and track time, but displays the entire wav form of the file.  Personally I enjoy this as I get to see the guts of what I’m listening to, but Soundcloud takes this ability one step further…they let you comment on any section of the wav form.  Say there’s a fresh melody transition in a song you’re feeling, or you love the drop in your favorite dubstep song, Soundcloud will let you comment on any of these sections in a song so you can let the artist know what part of the song you really enjoy and remind them how fuckin’ epic they really are.   I’ve yet to encounter any weaknesses with this site, they offer a free version with a limited allotted time, but if you need more you can purchase some different plans, that in turn offers more options and more information about your work such as the demographic of your listeners, play counts, web hits, and more.  I would highly suggest any artist looking for a solid site to get some music out there to give this site a shot; you won’t be disappointed in your results.

About the Blogger

As an artist, I don’t like to limit myself as much as what’s channeled is unable to be limited. I strive for producing sounds that tug the heart strings, paint a visual scene, amplify your vibrational frequency, and realign your chakra spine. I transitioned into Producing from Visual Arts in 2005 and feel today as if I’m just getting started. I come with a charismatic abstract approach to my work, and the realization that a canvas is not always necessary to bleed color.  I’m inspired by Orchestral, Cinematic, and Hip Hop elements.  I’m currently studying Sound Design for Visual Media as well as Studio/Audio Production and Engineering at the Institute of Production and Recording(IPR) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The plan is to get into Post Production and Film Scoring as well as Sound Design for Video Games upon graduation and begin branching from there, re-investing in my artistry and my fellow artists around me. Stay Tuned and In-Tune.
